Easy Christmas Centerpieces

Holidays are a pretty big deal in our household, especially Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving I begged my husband to drag out all the Christmas decorations. He did and I sat on the floor going through the boxes as he brought them upstairs and I said, “This is it?!” He responded, “Uh, yeah.” I just couldn’t believe how little we had. But then I remembered how small our condo was and even though last Christmas it felt like we had a bunch of stuff, it was really just a little bit of stuff in a little place. So what did we do?

We went shopping of course! Now, we didn’t go crazy or anything because I want to be sure to take advantage of the after Christmas sales and stock up, but we got enough decor to make it a little more festive in our home. One of my favorite decorations are the centerpieces I made. I got all of my supplies at Michael’s and it literally took me 5 minutes to make. I need a harder challenge! But look at the outcome. And even Molly approves! Love!

A Halloween Birthday Party

So, now that it’s almost December I’m finally getting around to posting Molly’s birthday party pics. I have become quite the slacker when it comes to uploading pictures lately. However, now that I have a new camera, I think hope I’ll be a little bit better about it.

Molly’s birthday is the beginning of November and her actually birthday weekend wasn’t going to work so we decided to do it the weekend before and have a Halloween theme. Boo! Molly’s Two!

Of course I used Pinterest for almost all of my decor and recipes. Who doesn’t do that nowadays?! I decided to go the Paperless Post route because I knew I’d never get snail mail invites out in time. Also, I’m pretty proud of myself for throwing a birthday party 3 weeks after having a baby. Granted, I had a lot of help and I planned everything out very meticulously!

Enjoy!

The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t

We survived Sandy. We were able to go trick-or-treating last night while others were not as fortunate. Our hearts go out to all those devastated by the storm.

Molly was very excited to celebrate Halloween. To be honest, we’ve been talking about Halloween for a long, long time now and her birthday party last weekend was Halloween themed. She’s been talking about “Halloween pumpkins” and “ghosts” and “Minnie dress” all week long. She also started saying “Happy Halloween” all around the house and especially to her little brother.

This photo of her in her Minnie Mouse costume reflects her complete excitement to go trick-or-treating. Oh to be a kid again!

Halloween Costume for a Preggo

Okay, so I’ve been seeing a lot of ideas for great preggo Halloween costumes. My favorite floating around the interwebs is from the fabulous Phar-Ma and one of my fellow Rollins College alums: Pregnant Skeleton Costume (full tutorial). I mean, how cute is that?

This year I’m no longer pregnant so I am not brainstorming costumes to accentuate the belly… in fact, I’m doing my best to hide it. I’m also currently planning a big Halloween bash for Molly’s 2nd birthday, so my costume is the least of my concerns. Give me some cat ears and call it a costume.

So what is the point of this rambling post? To show you my preggo costume from 2 years ago! Ben and I went to a party as a farmer and his prize winning pumpkin/jack-o-lantern. I actually had to leave the party because my contractions were getting so bad. Plus, it’s really not fun to be around drunk people (especially drunk people in costumes) when you can’t get drunk with them. Am I right?

Halloween Burlap Wreath

I’m so excited to share my latest craft with you! My mother-in-law is in town helping out while we wait for the arrival of Baby Johnson and she is a big crafter, so I thought, while she is here we should have a craft night! One of my besties loves crafting as well, so last week we headed off to Michaels to stock up on things to make fall wreaths with. I had been scouring Pinterest for some ideas and I grabbed a few things here and there to make my vision come to life.

Molly’s birthday party is in a few weeks and it’s Halloween themed, so I immediately knew I wanted my wreath to be more Halloween-y than fall-y. Plus, that means I can make a new one when Halloween is over. :)

Here are the materials I used:

  • 14″ foam floral wreath
  • 1 yard orange burlap – cut into strips 1″ x 16″
  • spider ribbon
  • glittery wooden letters (originally I was going to use plain wooden letters and paint them, but Michales was out of “O”s so I just bought the pre glitter ones)
  • orange acrylic paint
  • a paintbrush
  • hot glue gun

The first step is to paint the green floral wreath with the orange paint so that you won’t see any green peeking through when you tie on your burlap.

While the paint is drying you can start cutting your burlap. I will warn you: it’s MESSY. I was wearing black yoga pants and was COVERED in orange fibers. It looked like I had a bright orange dog or cat that I had let sit in my lap. You may want to pick up a lint brush with your supplies!

Once your paint is dry you can start tying on the burlap. You literally just tie the strips in knots around the wreath. So easy! Once you get all the way around take a step back and start adding more strips where you think it needs filling in. I ended up having a ton of burlap left over, but I’m not complaining!

Once you are happy with how your burlap looks you can start working with your embellishments. I just hot glued on my letters and created a pretty bow which I hot glued on as well. Here is the final product! I love it! When Halloween gets closer I’ve thought about adding spider webs and some plastic spiders… but we’ll see. :)

Happy Father’s Day To You!

Thanks for being such an amazing daddy to our little girl (and soon to our little man)!

I love you more every day!

10 Father’s Day Gift Ideas That Aren’t Ties

OK, so maybe you’re asking why I’m doing a Father’s Day post on a mom blog. Well, who ends up buying those gifts for Dad year after year?  That’s right, it’s us.  And we have Dad’s too! So I thought I’d do a little research and put together a few ideas that aren’t the dreaded tie for that special man Dad in your life. There’s something here for your own Dad, as well as the one to your kids.

For the sweet-toothed golfer, this Cookie Filled Golf Bag Cooler comes with 2 dozen gourmet cookies, 1 pound of honey roasted peanuts and 6 golf balls and tees from the Carolina Cookie company.  Not a bad choice since it plays on two different vices on men like kryptonite: golf and sweets.  $49.95

Most Dads like to unwind after a long day at work, or a hot day of yard work with a good quality brew. With a membership to the Beer of the Month Club from Clubs of America he can.  And you can talk him into more yard work.    $36.95/Mo.

Not every dad has a sweet tooth, so for those guys, check out this set of salted peanuts and cashews in Father’s Day tins. Whitley’s Peanut Factory is one of our very own Virginia companies so you know these peanuts and cashews will be fresh! $44.95

Now for the renegade dad, check out the Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey Making Kit form WineVine-Imports.  Follow every step they do at the Jim Beam distillery, even down to curing the barrel.  Don’t worry, it’s all legal.  Sale – $59.95

They say every man deserves a good shave. The Futur – Adjustable Double Edge Razor from Best Grooming Tools will give Dad just that. Shick & Gillette better watch their backs, because once he shaves with this one, he won’t go back.  $79.00

Unleash the inner kid in your special Dad with the PX-16 Offshore Racing RC Boat from Amazon.com.  Afterall, what comprehensive Father’s Day guide doesn’t have something that is remote controlled!?  $52.70

Give Dad the option of relaxation, anywhere, with the Eagles Nest Outfitters Single Nest Hammock from Half Moon Outfitters. Within minutes, he can be swaying in the breeze between two posts or trees, without a care in the world.  $54.95

No good tailgate or backyard barbeque is quite complete without a couple of rounds of cornhole.  These cornhole boards from Victory Tailgate are constructed with cabinet grade birch plywood tops and come in a variety of team colors, including the important local ones.  $134.95

Unleash his inner NASCAR with the Try It Racing Extreme Ride Along in Manassas.  Two and a half hours of instruction, driving and ride along time where your Dad will experience racing at full speeds. $100.00

Every man is the master of his destiny when he’s at the grill.  I think it’s some sort of instinct to cook meat over a fire for the family.  Sort of cave-man-ish.  Let Dad beef it up a little with this Grill Sergeant Apron from gifts.com. It even has an artillery belt that holds six cans of his favorite beverage… soda of course.  $19.99

Margarita Cupcakes

EFFFFFFF. I missed What’s Cookin’ Wednesday. Damn.

Anyway, I’m making these for a client for Cinco de Mayo. Why don’t you make some WITH me?!

Margarita Cupcakes by Brown Eyed Baker — GO VISIT HER SITE, IT ROCKS!

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • Zest and juice of 1½ limes
  • 2 tablespoons tequila
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk

To Brush the Cupcakes:

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons tequila

For the Tequila-Lime Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2¾ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons tequila
  • Pinch of coarse salt

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners; set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.

3. In an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the butter and sugar together until pale, light, and fluffy (about 5 minutes).

4. Reduce the mixer speed to medium and add the eggs one at at time, mixing thoroughly after each addition.

5. Scrape the sides of the bowl and add the lime zest, lime juice, vanilla extract and tequila. Mix until combined. (The mixture may start to look curdled at this point, but don’t worry, it will all come back together, power on!)

6. Reduce the mixer speed low. Add the dry ingredients in three batches, alternating with the buttermilk in two batches. Mix only until just incorporated, using a rubber spatula to give it one last mix by hand.

7. Divide the batter between the muffin cups. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until just slightly golden and a skewer shows only moist crumbs attached, rotating the pan at the halfway point.

8. Allow cupcakes to cool for 5 to 10 minutes, and then remove to a cooling rack. Brush the tops of the cupcakes with the 1 to 2 tablespoons of tequila. Set the cupcakes aside to cool completely before frosting them.

9. To make the frosting, whip the butter on medium-high speed of an electric mixer using the whisk attachment for 5 minutes. Reduce the speed to medium-low, and gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing and scraping the sides of the bowl until all is incorporated. Give it a mix on medium speed for about 30 seconds. Add the lime juice, tequila and salt mix on medium-high speed until incorporated and fluffy. If the frosting appears a bit too soft, add some additional sugar, one spoonful at a time until desired consistency is reached. Frost cupcakes and garnish, if desired, with lime zest, an additional sprinkling of salt and a lime wedge.
